Random Madness Home PageLammas Apple Candle Holders
Fruit is often a decoration for the Lammas altar.
So why not incorporate an apple or two into a candle holder?
You Will Need:
firm fruits
knife
lemon juice
sprig of rosemary, basil or other fresh herb
taper candle
Procedure:
First, you'll want to select some firm fruits.
Red apples, early acorn squash, even eggplants
work well -- apples seem to last the longest.
Rinse and dry the fruit or vegetable thoroughly.
Polish the outside with a soft cloth
until the apple is shiny.
Stand the apple up on its bottom, and use a
knife or a corer to make a hole in the
top where the stem is located.
Go about halfway down into the apple
so that the candle will have a sturdy base.
Widen the hole until it's the
same diameter as your candle.
Pour some lemon juice into the hole and allow
it to sit for ten minutes. This will prevent
the apple from browning and softening too quickly.
Pour out the lemon juice, dry out the hole,
and insert a sprig of rosemary, basil,
or other fresh herb of your choice.
Finally, add the taper candle.
Use a little bit of dripped wax
to secure the taper in place.

Here are some recipes for blends that can
be used for incense, or in any other way you choose.
Remember to dilute with alcohol for incense sticks
or with a carrier oil (corn or safflower) for
other uses. If you cannot get the essential oil
of certain herbs, you can make a herbal oil,
or dry and powder the actual herb.

1/2 cup of oatmeal
1/2 cup of corn meal
2 cups of water
1 teaspoon of salt
Procedure:
add 1/2 cup oat meal
and 1/2 cup corn meal
to 2 cups cold water
1 tsp salt.
Bring to boil and cook for
5 minutes to make a porridge.
Add 2 tbsp butter
1/2 cup of either molasses
(to make a dark bread)
or honey (to make a light bread)
Set aside to cool.
Dissolve 1 tsp sugar
in 1/2 cup lukewarm (150F) water
sprinkle 1 tbsp dry yeast over top.
Allow to stand for 10 minutes.
When yeast is a fluffy layer
on top of the water,
stir briskly with a fork to mix.
Add to lukewarm porridge mixture
Stir in 2 1/2 cups whole wheat flour.
Beat vigorously for five minutes.
This mixing allows gluten formation,
which gives the bread a springy texture.
Add another 2 1/2 cups flour.
Turn dough onto a floured
surface and kneed 9 minutes.
Add up to another cup of
flour if the dough gets sticky.
Sing appropriate chants or carols while kneading.
Meditate on your gratitude for the year's harvest.
Shape into a smooth ball and place in a buttered bowl.
Rotate dough in bowl to grease surface.
Cover with a damp tea towel.
Allow to rise until dough is doubled
in volume (1 1/2 to 2 hours)
Punch dough down and divide into five equal parts.
Form each into a flat round loaf,
place loaves on cookie sheets,
and brush with melted butter.
If desired, you can cut magical
symbols into the tops of the
loaves with a sharp knife.
Allow to rise under the damp tea
towel for another 45 minutes.
Bake at 400 degrees for 25-30 minutes.
Bread will sound hollow when tapped when cooked.
Brush top with melted butter
and place on cake racks to cool.
As you eat this bread, meditate
on the gifts you've received...
and on taking in and assimilating the
blessings you've put into the grains...
Share them with others if you wish.

Lammas RitualYou Will Need:
sheaves of wheat, barley or oats,
fruits and breads, corn dollies
candles and censer
circle of stones
Procedure:
Place upon the altar sheaves
of wheat, barley or oats,
fruit and breads, perhaps

goddess, can be present there as well.
Arrange the altar, light the
candles and censer,
and cast the Circle of Stones.
Recite the Blessing Chant.
Invoke the Goddess and God.
Stand before the altar,
holding aloft the sheaves of grain.
Say:
Now is the time of the First Harvest,
when bounties of nature give of themselves
so that we may survive.
O God of the ripening fields, Lord of the Grain,
grant me the understanding of sacrifice as you
prepare to deliver yourself
under the sickle of the
indexgoddess and journey to
the lands of eternal summer.
O Goddess of the Dark Moon,
teach me the secrets of rebirth
as the Sun loses its strength
and the nights grow cold."
Rub the heads of the wheat with your
fingers so that the grains fall onto the altar.
Lift a piece of fruit and bit, savoring it flavor.
Say:
partake of the first harvest, mixing its energies
with mine that I may continue my quest for the starry
wisdom of perfection.
O Lady of the Moon and Lord of the Sun,
gracious ones before Whom the stars halt their courses,
I offer my thanks for the continuing
fertility of the Earth.
May the nodding grain loose its seeds to be buried in
the Mothers breast, ensuring rebirth in the warmth
of the coming Spring.
Consume the rest of the fruit.
Works of magic, if necessary, may follow.
Celebrate the Simple Feast.
The circle is released.
It is appropriate to plant the seeds
from the fruit consumed in ritual.
If they sprout, grow the plant with love
and as a symbol of your connection
with the Goddess and God.

The Moon Goddess and the Sun God have
both matured as they have worked very
hard together to meet the goals they set at Ostara.
They have both gained much wisdom
and knowledge and are fully aware of
their responsibilities to finish
the tasks they have started.
It is becoming noticeably aware,
not only to the Goddess but also
to the Sun God, that his powers
and strength are growing weaker by the day.
The Effects This Could Have On A Female:
You may become very aware of your
responsibilities as they become a top priority.
You could find your emotions are
all over the place as though someone
has turned your world upside down
and you are waiting to
see where everything lands.
You may find yourself lacking in as
much patience and tolerance
as you normally would have.
You could have a strong need
to finish off any jobs you started.
You could be feeling under
pressure to accomplish your goal.
The Effects This Could Have On A Male:
You may become very aware of your
responsibilities as they become a top priority.
You could find that you have a strong
need to finish of all those little
and large tasks you started.
You may find yourself lacking in as much
energy as usual and find yourself cat-napping more often.
You could find that you have unexplained
mood changes and you are more irritable than normal.
You could be feeling under
pressure to accomplish your goal.
