What You Should Know About Essential Oils

Unfortunately not all essential oils are created equal.
In fact many, if not all the oils on the market
are what is called "perfume quality" or "4th & 5th quality oils.
These are over-processed, chemical laden,
highly adulterated & de-natured products that, in reality,
are little more than cheap perfume made from various odorous plants.
This includes oils found in health food stores.
Many people think that when they buy an oil that is labeled as "150% pure"
they are getting good oils. This is far from true.

Pure unadulterated essential oil is very hard to come by
& can be very expensive. One reason for this is because
it can take as many as 500 to 2,000 pounds or more
of raw plant material to produce just a
pound of pure essential oil.

To maintain all of the therapeutic qualities,
it must be extracted by steam distillation using
extremely low pressure & low heat so as not
to defile the quality of the oil.

There are 4 grades of essential oils:

PURE
This means the oil was not diluted with a lesser quality essential oil.
For example: lavender oil is often cut with lavendin,
which has very little therapeutic quality.
"Pure" does not mean it has no chemicals added to it.
It could be 75% vegetable oil & 25% essential oil & still be labeled "150% Pure."

NATURAL
This means the oil was not adulterated with vegetable
oils, propylene glycol, SD Alcohol 40 or other chemicals.

COMPLETE
This means the oil was distilled at low heat & low pressure so that
all the therapeutic properties are there. They have not been rectified
or purified (which means stripped or redistilled.) Essential oils
are often redistilled to make a small amount of oil go farther.
They can make more profit that way.
The problem is, when you redistill the oil you lose
the therapeutic properties. It's like using a tea bag over & over again.

An example: France is the number one producer of lavender oil.
In 1997 they produced 25 tons of lavender and 67 tons were shipped
to the U.S. Melissa oil is another example. It is very hard to produce.
Out of 52 pounds of pure melissa oil, 1500 pounds were exported.

What is wrong with this picture?

There are anywhere from 200 - 800 chemical constituents that take up a single essential oil.
When the oil is not distilled properly, you will be left with as few as 10.
Some of the most powerful healing constituents are at the end of the process.

GENUINE or GRADE A
These are the cream of the crop. Great care is taken at every step of the process.
Seeds- not from hybrids, soil- organic soil that never has chemicals put on it.
Chemicals are never used on the plants in the field.

Distillation by steam at low pressure & low temperature in upright containers &
no chemicals are ever used in the process. Must have clarity of definition
(one plant could have 200 species.) The time in the distiller is also important
Cypress oil needs to be distilled for 24 hours. Many companies will distill at
higher temperature for a shorter time. This will destroy the quality of the oil.
The distiller must be no more than 50 miles away from the sight where
the plants were harvested, must have Gas Chromatograph readings with
an embossed seal that does not come from their own lab.
Then & only then can they have the words "Grade A" on the label.

Young Living's oils are GRADE A oils. They are one of the few companies in the world
that grows plants from seed, distills & bottles their essential oils.
Young Living is the largest grower of essential oil plants in the world.

Healing Essential Oil Remedies

Nature has given us many healing gifts from the plant kingdom.
Healing essential oil remedies are one of the most enjoyable
ways to experience its benefits for enhancing wellness.
The benefits and pleasures of essential oil healing
can be enjoyed from purchased products or from the plants themselves.

Smell a rose and feel at peace.
Rub lavender flowers in your hands, breathe in,
and let out a stress-busting sigh of relief.
Crush a rosemary leaf, inhale deeply and feel your head clear.
Essential oil remedies are said to affect healing at different levels.
For example, on a physical level, lavender is useful for acne, pain, and sunburn.
On an emotional or mental level, lavender helps lift depression, relieve stress
and calm anxiety.They are used as vibrational remedies in energetic healing.
For year round essential oil healing, consider purchasing
therapeutic grade essential oils. They are more expensive than lower quality oils,
but are pure and more effective. They last a long time because you use so little.
Common therapeutic essential oils of good quality are usually available through local
health food stores and on-line. Look for high quality oils from
companies you trust such as Mountain Rose Herbs.
Fragrance oils are not essential oils, they are totally synthetic
and have no health benefits.
Essential oil remedies are very easy to use.
If mixing your own blends, you do need to follow some basic guidelines
to achieve the desired actions and to use them safely.
Consult an aromatherapy book or good on-line source for instructions and recipes.
If you prefer, prepared blends are readily available for a variety of needs.
Follow the directions on the bottle. Remember, in aromatherapy, less is more.
Don't be tempted to use essential oils internally.
Unless you really know your oils and what you are doing, this is unsafe.
Although therapeutic grade essential oils are sometimes administered
internally by skilled aromatherapists, most essential
oil remedies are for external use only.
Always test the remedy on a small patch of skin first
to make sure it doesn't cause a reaction.

Essential Oil Remedies

Here are a just few examples of how you can experience essential oil healing for yourself.
These three oils are commonly used, readily available and moderately priced.

Lavender oil is probably the most known and loved of the essential oils, especially by women.
Here is one of my favorite ways to enjoy lavender oil. Put a drop in your hands
and rub them together. Cover your nose and mouth with your hands. Close your eyes
and inhale deeply for instant relaxation and stress-relief.
Put a drop or two on a cotton ball and carry it with you.
Sniff anytime for an instant stress-buster. Heaven!
You can also dab a bit of lavender oil on a sunburn, an insect bite or a pimple.
Use five-to-ten ten drops mixed in some oil or salts and add to bath water.
Add a few drops to skin lotion.

Peppermint oil A whiff of peppermint oil delivers an instant pick-me-up.
It can be used alone or combined with lavender oil to counteract nervous stress and mental fatigue.
Eat a strong peppermint candy to help with flatulence or intestinal upset.
Use one drop added to water as a gargle for bad breath or sore throat.
Some people find this oil irritating on their skin so be sure to test first.

Peppermint oil is added to commercially made mint candies.
These candies are offered after meals because peppermint helps with digestion.
Tea tree oil is a very popular for essential oil healing.
It has a reputation as one of the best therapeutic essential
oils when you want to use a natural remedy for bacterial or fungal skin infections.
You can apply a drop for toe nail fungus, ringworm, acne, warts,
insect bites and infected wounds. Tea tree oil can be used straight or "neat".
If it irritates your skin, dilute with a carrier oil or a little lotion.
Inhale to counteract negative thinking, nervous exhaustion or shock.
Can also be combined with lavender.
Use as a steam inhalation for respiratory infections or
add a few drops to the humidifier.
Tea tree oil is useful for disinfecting around the house.
Add several drops to your natural cleaning spray or laundry.

Beyond Essential Oil Healing

Some fascinating research has been done regarding aromatherapy
and its uses beyond essential oil healing.
Researchers have found that there is a strong link between scents and memory.

"Forgotten" memories buried in the subconscious can bubble to the surface
in the presence of an associated aroma. Students who sniff certain scents
while studying find it easier to recall information when
sniffing the same scent during an exam.

When you have specific goals in place, everyday smells can activate these goals.
People who smell lemon, a common cleaning fluid scent, are more likely to tidy up than those who don't.
Realtors suggest that people use cinnamon or bake a pie when showing a home.
It makes the house feel like home.

Lemon oil is diffused in Japanese stores because people buy more when they smell lemon.
Perhaps this is because it is an uplifting scent.

A few drops of good quality lemon or orange oil added to a marinade on fish
or chicken are yummy smelling and tasting.
This is one of the few exceptions to the external use only rule.

How To Make Essential Oils

Essential oils are used for aromatherapy purposes, scenting bath
and body preparations, refreshing or making potpourri,
and blending into perfumes or colognes.
Many of the recipes include essential oils,
and it’s fun to try making your own at home.
There is just one note of caution:
Although you will be making your essential oils
from natural ingredients, please do not be tempted
to take them internally. Essential oils
are very strong and often are not safe to consume.
Additionally, your plants may not have been '
prepared in sterile conditions.

True essential oils are extracted from only one scent,
but you can create your own mixtures of fragrances
by extracting them from several flowers and herbs together.
Such a blend may smell wonderful or not good at all—you may
want to save this alternative until you're a little more
experienced with what goes together well.

are suitable for making your own essential oils.

The easiest way to make essential oils at home is to use a simple
variation of the effleurage and maceration techniques. Fresh herbs
and flowers make the strongest essential oils; however,
if you do not grow your own or have access to fresh plants,
you can use dried products instead.

The seven sacred planets (the five visible planets plus the Sun and Moon)
relate to the days of the week and also planetary hours within days
and seven sacred planets were associated with ancient Gods and Goddesses.
The use then of these planets and their hours has an ancient history
in Witchcraft and Paganism. These oils help invoke the powers
and characteristics of the individual planetary power.
You can use these oils to anoint candles,
or wear them as personal scent to help convey the power of the
deities represented by the Planets.
They may also be combined with Zodiacal Oils when
one is working an astrologically-based spell.

Oil Correspondences

Candles are frequently rubbed with scented oils from wick to end to attract something.
To repel something rub from end to wick. As you do this concentrate
on the purpose you have in mind. Candles can be used with oils(anoint)only or oil and herbs.
If called for, roll the oiled candle in the appropriate herbs, still thinking fo your goal.
Oils also work well burned alone by adding a few drops of appropriate oils to
a white candle before lighting it. I marked what i think are must haves with *.
These are ones I have used and own.

Chamomile may trigger asthma attacks in some people.
St. John’s Wort, not in the oil form, but in the edible form,
will negate the effect of birth control pills.

Purification Oil

4 drops frankincense oil
3 drops myrrh oil
1 drop sandalwood oil
1/8 cup base oil

Add to bath or wear to be rid of negativity.
Use to anoint tools, candles, etc. that need to be cleansed.

Blend ingredients and simmer on low heat in an enamel pan.
Remove from burner and let cool.
Place it in a small bottle or bowl that will only be used to charge and anoint items such as candles in your Magick Circle.
To charge the oil itself, bring it into your Magic Circle or sacred space.

Basil brings protection and love;
Sage brings purification, protection, healing, wealth, longevity;
Patchouli brings prosperity, wards off evil and negativity, aids divination.
All of these are desirable generic attributes so makes a good blend for general purposes.
Great for keeping on your personal altar for magical workings.

Add 2 tablespoons of this mix to 2 ounces of oil.

Fiery Wall of Protection Oil

Fiery Wall of Protection is one of most popular formulas for psychic
and spiritual defense and warfare in New Orleans Voodoo and hoodoo.
It can be used to deal with every type of threat imaginable and works
well with commanding, bend over and uncrossing products.
In addition to being used as a means of defense, this formula can
be used to help with legal, health and business problems.
Its name is said to invoke the power and protection of Archangel Michael’s flaming sword.

If you are in need of protection from an evil perpetrator,
anoint the doors and window of your home with this oil
and dust the floors of your home with the powder.
You can use the oil and powder to dress candles for candle spells as well.
It can also be used in tandem with Enemy works as a means
of protection from potential backlash or counterattack.

frankincense
cayenne pepper
pinch of rue

chunk of dragon’s blood resin

Add the above ingredients to 2 ounces of pure olive
oil to which a dropper of vitamin E has been added.
Ordinary table salt can be blessed by reciting the 23rd psalm over it.

Simmer over a low-heat in an enamel pan.
Let cool.
Pour into small bottles and charge.

Protection Ointment

These blended oils are very powerful.
When you are not sure which oil suits your intent best, you can use this oil.
However you need to focus on a specific purpose if you use it in this manner.
Use as a scent on a light ring or for candle anointing.
It gives a pleasant feeling to a room.
Good for consecrating ritual tools, candles, altars and work rooms.

This money drawing oil is great for any magic that you might be
doing that needs an extra kick. You can use it to dress candles
for candle spells, or to anoint money attracting plants, charms
and talismans. Make sure that you make abundant quantities of
this money-drawing oil, as just having it sitting in the house
is sure to have an effect on your income.

2 cinnamon sticks
2 bay leaves
zest from two types of citrus
2 pomegranate seeds
2 leaves from a pineapple

Fill a bottle with the three oils, and place the remaining ingredients in the bottle.
Allow the bottle to sit, undisturbed for three weeks.
During this time, whenever you see the bottle of oil, hold your hands near it
and charge it with your desire to fill your life with wealth.
For an easy money charm, take a cotton ball and soak it in money oil.
Place the cotton ball in a small plastic bag, or an old film canister.
Keep the cotton ball in your purse, so it can draw money to you all the time.

Add the essential oils and mix well. Store in a cool dry place.

Many Romanies roll their bills rather than keeping them flat.
Smearing the outside bill with Money Drawing Oil is believed to attract cash.

Blend together in an eggcup and put In a clean brown or dark medicine bottle.
Some of these oils are volatile.
Do not anoint yourself with Banishing oil. You could burn yourself.
Wash your hands after using.
Charge the stone or stones used after adding it and focus on the person
and your intent pouring in energy and emotion.
As you dress the candles you make them your magickal tools.
Charge again as you massage away from you massaging in banishing

All Purpose Magic Candle Anointing Oil

1 cup rose petals
1 cup violets
1 cup water
1 cup olive oil 1 tbsp clove oil
2 teaspoons powdered cinnamon
1 tablespoon powdered myrrh
1/4 cup wild fennel seeds

Gather rose petals and violets at sunrise.
Place them in a clean ceramic crock.
Cover with water (fresh rain water, preferably)
and let crock sit in a sunny location for three days until an oily film
(the essential oil of the flowers) is seen floating on top of the water.
Remove oil from water by carefully absorbing it into a small cotton ball.
Squeeze out oil into a clean, long-necked glass bottle.
Add olive and clove oils, and swirl gently in a clockwise direction to slowly agitate oils.
Next, add cinnamon, myrrh, and fennel seeds.
Seal bottle tightly and store it in a dark, cool place.
After four weeks, strain through cheesecloth and use to anoint candles.

New Orleans practitioners when working for positive purposes such

It is used to anoint candles for beginning and ending candle magic

with the work to be done. Because the ingredients used in the
formula are all highly positive energies, this oil should never
be used to anoint candles or other ritual objects for left-handed
or sinister purposes. Altar oil is designed for blessing oneself
or another, ritual objects, or anything that resides on the altar.

40 drops frankincense
20 drops Myrrh
10 drop cedar

Blend with 2 ounces of olive oil to which a small amount of vitamin
E has been added as a preservative.
Add a piece of frankincense and a piece of myrrh gum to each bottle.

Pain Relief Therapeutic Massage Oil Recipe

8 drops lavender essential oil
4 drops marjoram essential oil
1 drop cedarwood essential oil
1 drop chamomile essential oil
1 drop ginger essential oil
1/4 cup (60ml) carrier oil of your choice such as
apricot kernel oil, jojoba oil or sunflower oil

Optional: Substitute 1 tablespoon (15ml)
borage oil for 1 tablespoon of carrier oil.
Borage oil helps support mobility of joints and tissues.

Combine all ingredients in a dark glass or PET plastic bottle.
(I recommend using one with an oil or lotion dispenser cap so
you don't accidentally pour it all over everything.)
Wait at least 24 hours before using to let the blend 'cure'.
Store the bottle in a cool, dark place. Use within three months.
If you want to make a larger amount of this therapeutic massage oil recipe,
depending on the size of the bottle, simply double or triple the recipe.
(Remember it tends to go rancid after a few months.)

Caution: Ginger may irritate sensitive skin,
which is why it's at such a low concentration.
If you're exceptionally sensitive, leave it out.
If you're allergic to ragweed,
you may also want to leave out the chamomile.

Holy Spirit Oil

Another of the New Orleans Holy Trinity of Blessing oils,
the others being Altar Oil and Van Van. As with Altar oil,
Holy Spirit Oil is used for highly positive works
with summoning helpful spirits. Holy Spirit Oil is designed
for blessing oneself or another, ritual objects,
or anything else that needs special blessings.

Combine the above ingredients in a base of pure olive oil from Israel.
Add a little vitamin E to the bottle to keep from going rancid.

Peace and Love Massage Oil

Mix well in an air tight two ounce jar.
Turn jar over daily for at least ten days before using.
Rub the oil on the candle before burning.

1 coconut (punch holes in the coconut, drain
and reserve the liquid, then split the coconut in half)

(sweet alcoholic drinks like Bailey's, Amaretto, Triple Sec, etc...)

When conjuring up this spell, you must perform it on a Friday night.
You are to ask the goddess of love (Ochun/Venus) to grant your wish of love.
To start, take one half of the coconut and pour into it

Add the reserved coconut water and then cover it with
the other half of the coconut shell.
